Towcester Knife Amnesty Bin

Good afternoon,

I'm pleased to report that a knife amnesty bin was recently installed in Towcester and is attached to the Sawpits building on Richmond Road (the old library). The bin was funded by a charity called Off The Streets, and we worked alongside Towcester Town Council, local Councillors and Kevin Boom - the father of a murder victim, who spearheaded the project to have a knife bin in the town centre.

It is there to be used - if you have knives in your possession which you want to safely dispose of, please consider utilising the knife bin and encourage others to do so. It's an anonymous way to get knives off the streets and correctly disposed of. If you know of anyone carrying knives for their own protection - please encourage them to use the knife bin. The bin is specifically NOT covered by cctv so it a discreet and anonymous method of disposal.

The UK charity Crimestoppers describes the belief that a knife provides protection as a "false sense of safety" and notes that people who carry knives are more likely to become victims of knife crime themselves. Carrying a knife makes it more likely that someone will harm you.

From a practical Policing perspective, the safest approach is usually: 

We on the Towcester Neighbourhood Policing Team will check and empty the bin each month.
